What Is an ABA Therapy Assessment and Why Does My Child Need One?

Before ABA therapy begins, every child goes through a comprehensive evaluation called an assessment. If you have recently been referred for ABA services and you are not entirely sure what that involves, this guide explains it clearly.

The assessment is not a formality. It is the foundation everything else is built on. Understanding what it is and why it matters will help you show up to it as the informed, prepared parent your child needs.

What Is an ABA Assessment?

An ABA assessment is a thorough evaluation of your child’s current skills, behaviors, and learning needs. It is conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst before therapy begins and is used to design every aspect of your child’s treatment program.

The goal is to understand where your child is right now across multiple areas of development, identify what skills they need to build, make sense of behaviors that may be getting in the way of learning or daily life, and create a clear starting point so that progress can be tracked meaningfully over time.

Without a thorough assessment, ABA therapy would be guesswork. The assessment is what makes individualized, effective treatment possible rather than generic programming.

What Happens During the Assessment?

ABA assessments are not a single appointment. They typically unfold over multiple sessions across one to two weeks. Here is what that usually includes.

A Conversation with You

The BCBA starts by meeting with you to gather a detailed history: your child’s development, medical background, prior evaluations, how they function at home and school, what they enjoy, what is hard, and what goals matter most to your family. This conversation is essential. It gives the BCBA context that no observation alone can provide.

Come prepared to share both your child’s challenges and their strengths. The assessment is designed to capture the whole picture, not just the areas of concern.

Direct Observation of Your Child

The BCBA observes your child directly, often in both structured settings and natural play contexts. They watch how your child communicates, plays, interacts, responds to directions, and handles transitions. This gives the BCBA firsthand information about how your child functions in real time.

Standardized Skill Assessments

BCBAs use validated assessment tools to evaluate your child’s skills across developmental areas. These tools help identify exactly which skills are established, which are emerging, and which have not yet developed. The specific tools used depend on your child’s age and profile.

Functional Behavior Assessment

For children who engage in behaviors that are challenging or interfere with learning or daily life, the BCBA may conduct a functional behavior assessment. This process identifies what purpose the behavior serves for the child. Understanding why a behavior is happening is essential to addressing it effectively.

What Does the Assessment Measure?

A comprehensive assessment looks at your child across several areas: communication and language, social skills, daily living and self-care, academic readiness, and behaviors that may be interfering with learning or daily functioning. The goal is a complete picture, not a partial snapshot.

How Long Does It Take?

Most assessments take place over multiple sessions spanning one to two weeks. Some are completed in two or three sessions. Others take longer if your child needs more time to warm up, if a more detailed functional behavior assessment is needed, or if the provider is gathering information from your child’s school team as well.

It takes the time it takes. A thorough assessment is worth the wait.

What Happens After?

Once the assessment is complete, the BCBA prepares a written report and a treatment plan. The report summarizes findings, identifies strengths and areas of need, and outlines the goals that will be targeted in therapy. The treatment plan specifies which teaching methods will be used, how progress will be measured, the recommended number of hours per week, and how you will be involved.

You review this plan with the BCBA before therapy starts. This is your opportunity to ask every question you have, share your priorities, and make sure the goals reflect what actually matters for your child’s daily life.
