Sensory‑Friendly Events Happening In June
Children Activities, Parent Education
June is here and with it, more opportunities to get outside, explore, and experience the season together as a family. Whether you’re easing into summer routines or looking for a meaningful outing that won’t overwhelm your child, the Chicagoland area has a strong lineup of sensory-friendly events this month.
From outdoor adventures and interactive play to aquatic experiences and movie screenings, there’s something for a range of ages, sensory needs, and comfort levels. These events are designed with your child in mind: lower noise, reduced crowds, thoughtful accommodations, and a genuine sense of welcome.
We’ve rounded up four sensory-friendly events happening across the Chicagoland area this June. As always, we recommend reviewing each event’s page before attending, as details and accommodations can vary. And if you’ve been to any of these, or have a recommendation we missed, we’d love to hear from you.

Sensory Friendly Film Showings
📅 Date: Second and Fourth Saturdays (Family Friendly)
📍 Location: AMC Theatres; Various Locations
AMC Theatres’ Sensory Friendly Film program offers a recurring opportunity for families to enjoy a movie in a welcoming, low-stimulation environment. During these screenings, the lights are turned up slightly, the sound is turned down, and families are free to get up, move around, and make noise, because kids should never have to sit still to have a good time at the movies. With showings on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, there’s a built-in excuse to make it a summer tradition.

Autism Skate at Tinley Park Roller Rink
📅 Date: Sunday, June 28, 2026 • 9:30–11:30 AM
📅 Recurring: Fourth Sunday of every month
📍 Location: Tinley Park Roller Rink
17658 Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park, IL 60477
Autism Skate at the Tinley Park Roller Rink is a dedicated skating session designed for individuals with autism and their families. Held the fourth Sunday of every month from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, this event offers a lower-sensory skating environment before the rink opens to the general public, which means less noise, less crowding, and a lot more room to skate, stumble, and smile. Whether your child is a seasoned skater or brand new to the rink, this is a wonderfully active, social way to spend a Sunday morning all summer long.
A Few Tips Before You Go
Sensory-friendly events are a great opportunity, but a little preparation can go a long way toward making the outing a success for your child and your whole family.
- Review the event page ahead of time for details on accommodations, quiet spaces, and what to expect. Every event is a little different.
- Visit at your child’s best time of day, if you have flexibility. Morning outings tend to work well for many children before fatigue sets in.
- Pack your child’s sensory toolkit: noise-canceling headphones, fidgets, a preferred comfort item, and snacks they’ll reliably eat.
- Give yourself permission to leave early if you need to. A 20-minute visit that ends on a positive note is better than a longer one that ends in overwhelm.
- Talk with your child’s OT or therapy team beforehand. They may have specific strategies for preparing your child for a new environment.
We’ll Keep Adding to This List
We share sensory-friendly events each month because we know how much it matters to find spaces where your child, and your whole family, can simply be. If you know of an event we missed or a resource you’d like us to share, reach out. We’re always looking to grow this list.
